First stop: Bird Island (Isla Pájaros)
A protected islet inside the Yalahau lagoon where more than a hundred species live and nest: pelicans, frigatebirds, herons, cormorants, ibis — and in season, April through October, flamingos. There’s no landing: the island belongs to them, and that’s exactly why they’re still there. You watch from the boat and from lookout platforms built for it, with the birds going about their lives as if we didn’t exist — which is precisely the idea. Bring a zoom camera if you have one, or binoculars: worth gold.
Second stop: the Yalahau spring
A freshwater spring rising in the middle of the lagoon, ringed by jungle and mangrove. Fishermen of old stopped here to refill their water reserves; local legend says the Maya held it as a fountain of youth. Your only job: take the freshest dip of your trip. There’s a lookout to see it from above and a calm swimming area.
Third stop: Passion Island (Isla de la Pasión)
A white sandbank surrounded by shallow, transparent water, with a lookout and shrubs as its only architecture. It’s the tour’s postcard: you walk where there seems to be no island, only sea. In season, flamingos also use its sandbars to feed and rest — if you’re lucky, keep your distance and enjoy the gift. Free time for photos and for doing absolutely nothing.

When to go?
Year-round. Morning departures get the best light for birds and the stillest lagoon; if you’re after flamingos, the season runs April through October — they’re free, migratory birds, so nobody honest guarantees them, but those months play in your favor.
What to bring
Swimsuit on, towel, hat and water. Biodegradable sunscreen — the lagoon is a protected area and the regular kind damages exactly what you came to see. Repellent for the mangrove stretch. And some cash for the post-tour craving.
